The whole concept of people bringing AI into their personal lives has been done many times before, in all formats of sci-fi. But Alex changes his mind right upon the point of returning the thing, and begins to explore just what kind of life the gift could end up presenting to him. This being a world where the first real Artificial Intelligence went nasty and killed people a year ago, Alex is certainly torn about having the thing in his flat – especially as it just kowtows to his wishes and opinions without having anything like its own, as it is not allowed to get that close to sentience. Unfortunately, as Alex sees it, she buys him one for his birthday as well – a Tanaka X5, which you wake up by tugging on an earlobe. But others aren't too keen for Alex to carry on like that – people such as his gran, who has given herself the gift of an android in the form of a handsome young man to, er, keep her company. He meets few people in the workplace, has a quite antiseptic flat with his virtual cinema and his flying robotic kitchen aide, and that's about it. You'd probably be in a minority if you did, for he's a bit of a loner since he broke up with his last girlfriend. Summary: A superlative drama from the near future, with a stunning artistic style giving us something we may have seen before, but never done this well. Despite its heartfelt intentions and some impressive performances, The Kite Runner doesn’t improve in any significant way over The Kite Runner on screen. There was a part in the book that the little house wondered what those bright lights were in the distance. It was such a sweet story about a little house and how it saw the world change around her. I really enjoyed this Caldecott winner from 1943. Then one day a great-great granddaughter of the builder finds the house and moves it back out into the country on a hill where her story began. Eventually the city develops around her and she is not longer able to enjoy neither the sunrise nor the changing of the seasons. Then one day the little house notices the lights of a city and wonders about it. She enjoys watching the sunrise and the season changing. The story is about a little house built on the hill in the countryside. Zuhra and Inara's father was one of the Paladins, but he disappeared on the night Inara was born, breaking their mother's heart. There is also a secret gateway/ portal between two worlds through which various monsters can creep into the human world, but which was also the way Paladins (magic warriors) came in to protect us. There is a semi-abandoned Citadel, and a mysterious hedge that keeps the sisters ZUhra and Inara, their mother and their caretaker Sami in, either protecting or imrisoning them within the Citadel's boundaries. It has a wonderful, original magic system, a gripping plot, and, above all, it is about sisters whose bond is stronger than any kind of spell. I was hooked from the very line: "The night my sister was born, the stars died and were reborn in her eyes…" and literally couldn't stop until I finished it. |
